Letter: Much too quick to condemn

Friday, Sept. 21, 2001 | 5:18 a.m.

A direct response to John Heple, author of a Sept. 16 letter:

I do not know you personally, so I don't know if you have ever sat on a missile made of steel and human. Have you ever been in a position such as those victims were?

If you have, well then, gee, I'm sorry we can't all act as bravely and perfectly as you must have. If you haven't, then shut up! You know not of what you speak.

Not one of us witnessing this will ever know the terror those airline passengers faced. The people aboard United Flight 93, which went down in Pennsylvania, are brave heroes who deserve to be recognized as such. They did act.

But the passengers who sat on the other three planes are not "sheep" simply because they did not act quickly. They are humans. They are victims who have families, which you insulted with your smug self-righteousness.

You sit in your home with the luxury of thought and breath, far removed from the scene of the attacks.

If your loved ones had been on any of those planes, would you be so quick to condemn?
