CARSON CITY -- Spurred by sales of building materials and autos, Nevada's taxable sales reached $2.597 billion in July, a gain of 3.9 percent over the same month of a year ago.

But tax collections and taxable sales are expected to take a downturn for September because of the unsettled economy after the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.

Business in eating and drinking establishments was up 2.4 percent, general merchandise stores rose 5.8 percent and miscellaneous retail was up 3.8 percent.

The state said Clark County merchants rang up $1.825 billion in sales, a gain of 3 percent.

In Clark County, building materials sales jumped 10.2 percent to $122.3 million, car sales rose 8.4 percent to $261.4 million and sales at bars and restaurants inched up 2.9 percent to $397.3 million.

General merchandise stores in Southern Nevada sold $139.1 million worth of goods, up 4.6 percent, but the home furniture business declined by 0.1 percent to $97.6 million. Apparel and accessory stores produced $81.4 million in sales, up 4.8 percent.
