Memorial planned at Red Rock
Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001 | 10:36 a.m.
The nation's sorrow from terrorist attacks on Sept. 11 will be etched in native stone along a memorial walkway at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.
The Bureau of Land Management, Friends of Red Rock Canyon and the Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association are splitting the costs of installing the memorial stones. The dedication will coincide with National Public Lands Day on Sept. 29.
Aquarius Stone will use a computer graphics program to build a stencil of the artwork for each stone, then will carve the 3-foot by 3-foot paving blocks by sandblasting.
The walkway will eventually encircle the Mojave Desert tortoise enclosure next to the Red Rock Visitors Center.
