Letter: Don’t judge passengers

Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001 | 9:10 a.m.

I find the attack on the character of those who endured the terror on board those hijacked airplanes reprehensible.

The letter to the editor written by John Heple in Sunday's paper was nothing short of ignorant. Unfortunately, it is not the first I have heard of these accusations. Some of my classmates at the college I attend here in Las Vegas said much the same. How can you possibly blame the passengers?

We have no idea what happened on board those aircraft prior to the crashes at the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. We don't know what the terrorists said or did to gain control. They probably lied and said they had a bomb or something with equal leverage. Airline crews are trained to be cooperative in the event of a hijacking to avoid unnecessary deaths. They did not know the intent of these terrorists.

We have no right to judge the reactions of these people. Pray for those left behind, and do not make our grief harder by making ignorant accusations.
