Former railroad land rezoned
The developers of the former Union Pacific Railroad property west of downtown will be able to build a casino as part their projects.
The council Wednesday amended the city's zoning code to allow gaming as acceptable uses on the parcels west of downtown. The gaming enterprise district had previous stopped east of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.
The change allows development of up to 300,000 square feet of casino space and up to 5,000 hotel rooms.
50-year lease OK'd for parcels
Supporters of a proposed outdoor neon museum have been granted a 50-year lease for two parcels that could one day showcase pieces of Las Vegas history.
The council Wednesday approved an amendment to the lease agreement between the city and the Neon Museum for two parcels near the corner of McWilliams Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard North. The amendment extends the lease for each parcel to 50 years. Supporters of the museum had hoped to extend the leases -- which had been on a yearly basis -- in order to secure financing for a neon museum.
Teen centers added to exclusion
Sexually oriented businesses will be required to locate more than 1,000 feet from a teen dance center, according to a bill adopted by the City Council Wednesday.
The bill, sponsored by Councilman Michael McDonald, amends the city's zoning code to include a distance requirement for teen dance centers, citing their incompatibility with sexually oriented businesses. Sexually oriented businesses are already required to locate 1,000 feet away from churches, public or private schools, day cares, parks, and playgrounds.
The bill defines teen dance centers as an establishment that caters primarily to persons under the age of 18.
The council also adopted a bill that requires all new-car dealerships planned in the northwest to locate in the general service commercial zone of Town Center, north of Cheyenne Avenue.
