Land to be sold for low-income complex

Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001 | 10:34 a.m.

City Council members Wednesday unanimously voted to sell a 6.69-acre site near Tonopah Avenue and Yale Street to a nonprofit developer who plans to build an apartment complex with 70 units for low-income seniors.

While Community Development Programs Center of Nevada will pay $320,000 for the property, the city will contribute the same amount in federal money to the project to help pay for architect and planners' fees, said Kenny Young, the city's redevelopment manager.

In May, the developer received $499,791 in federal tax credits, which will help to pay for the land and refurbish a dilapidated, 1.86-acre park on the east side of Yale Street.

The North Las Vegas Housing Authority had leased the park in 1998, along with another, 1.28-acre park across the street. The latter parcel will become the entrance of the apartment complex.

The authority is a managing partner in the project and will oversee day-to-day management once the complex is up and running, said Don England, the authority's executive director.

England added that construction of the project could begin in December or January, with completion of the complex scheduled for fall or winter 2002.
