Educational hikes planned

Adults and children can learn a lot about animals and plantlife in the Southern Nevada desert during hikes and walks offered at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Some upcoming programs:

Early Morning Mammals: (age 12 to adult) Learn some facts about the little furry friends that make their home at Red Rock Canyon on the two-mile moderate trail Thursday. Meet at the Fee Station.

Our Fragile Desert: (age 10 to adult) Observe some of the desert's relationships on this moderately easy two-mile hike along the Arnight Trail Friday.

Slippery to Prickly: (age 12 to adult) Meander through the swirls and curls of color in the Calico Hills and learn more about the rich collection of the cactus and yuccas of the area on this two-mile moderate hike Saturday.

Strange Objects Astronomy: (family) Visit with the Las Vegas Astronomical Society Saturday and learn more about the heavens. There will be a 30-minute slide presentation before viewing the stars through telescopes provided by the Society.

Sandstone Canyon Hike: (age 10 to adult) Explore geologic features, observe and discuss the flora and fauna on this two-mile moderately strenuous hike Sunday.

Bonanza Trail's Wooded Wonders: (age 12 to adult) Go deep into the woodlands and learn about their roles in early Nevada history on this five-mile moderately strenuous hike Sunday.

The hikes are free, but reservations are required for all programs. Most begin at the Visitors Center. To make reservations or for information call 363-1922.

Awards to be given at benefit dinner

The 2001 Circle of Roses Awards will be presented Friday during St. Therese Center's annual fund-raising dinner at the Riviera hotel.

The event will feature an envelope lottery, silent auction, dinner, program and awards presentation.

Among this year's recipients of the Circle of Roses Award is the Mission Services Department at St. Rose Dominican Hospital for its community outreach activities such as the Positive Impact program that provides healthcare for uninsured school-age children.

The Rev. Bill Duff will also be honored for his many years of providing services to those suffering from HIV/AIDS.

Tickets for the event are $75, and all proceeds will benefit the St. Therese Center. For more information, call 564-4224.

Recreation centers to host programs

Community garage sales will be held 7 a.m.-noon Saturday at Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive, 7 a.m.-noon Oct. 6 at the Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road.

Residents wishing to sell clothes, toys, books, sporting goods and other second-hand items may do so by reserving a 10-foot-by-10-foot space for $10 each. To reserve a space, call 450-5885 or 565-2880.

The American Academy of Dermatology

is conducting a national mall tour 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Boulevard mall to raise awareness about actinic keratoses, or Aks. Call (888) 462-DERM.
