August gambling win increased slightly

NEW ORLEANS -- Fueled by Texas border markets, Louisiana's state-licensed casinos won $169.3 million from gamblers during the final summer tourist month of August.

The 14 riverboats won $147.2 million, up from $144 million in July, while Harrah's New Orleans Casino won $22.1 million, an increase from $21.3 million the previous month, state police reported Tuesday.

The five gambling boats in Shreveport-Bossier City won $72.8 million, down slightly from $74.3 million in July, while the pair of two-boat complexes in Lake Charles won $34.9 million, up from $31.3 million in July.

Harrah's New Orleans and the three riverboats in the market combined to win $46.5 million in August, compared with $44.9 million in July. In Baton Rouge, the two floating casinos won $15.1 million, up from $14.7 million in July.

The Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City was the big winner among state-licensed casinos in August with $22.9 million in winnings, followed by Harrah's New Orleans.
