Local team to go to New York
Members of the Clark County urban search and rescue team are preparing for deployment to New York next week to aid in recovery efforts at the World Trade Center.
The team was told Tuesday that it will be deployed next week, possibly on Monday. Its 62 members include 46 firefighters, 10 Metro Police officers, two structural engineers, two communications specialists and two emergency room doctors.
Federal officials have announced the mission at the bombing site has shifted from search and rescue to search and recovery.
The Southern Nevada-based team would relieve volunteers from the East Coast who were the first called to the scene.
National Guard put on hold
The 21 Nevada National Guard troops scheduled to help with security at Hoover Dam have been put on hold by the National Guard Bureau in Washington, D.C.
"We're just waiting for a decision out of Washington on how to best use our forces," Nevada National Guard spokeswoman April Conway said. "Nevada isn't as big a state as California, so we have fewer resources to draw on."
Nearly 1,800 soldiers serve in the Nevada National Guard, and Conway says that a decision on whether to place the troops at the dam is expected today or Thursday.
The soldiers were going to be used to help reroute traffic at checkpoints near the dam.
Citizens warned to watch money
Secretary of State Dean Heller Tuesday warned investors to look out for opportunistic schemes that are trying to take advantage of the terrorist attacks.
Heller said Nevadans should be wary of telephone salespeople, advertisements or Internet postings that tout commodities, exotic financial products or supposed anti-terrorist technologies. And they should be cautious about pitches to send money offshore to so-called "safe havens."
"In the wake of last week's tragedies, investors should resist the temptation to make hasty decisions about their investments," Heller said.
