Man killed inside apartment

A 28-year-old man was shot to death inside his apartment late Monday, and three men were seen fleeing the area.

The slain man's four roommates told police they were awakened by gunfire and saw three men running from the apartment in the 1100 block of South Eastwood Drive, near St. Louis and Eastern avenues, about 11:40 p.m. Monday, Metro Police said.

The suspects were seen getting into a large white or tan, four-door car, possibly an older Mercury Marquis with custom wheels, police said.

The name of the slain man was not released this morning.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call Metro's homicide unit at 229-3521 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.

City's cable channel honored

The city of Las Vegas government access television channel, KCLV Cox cable Channel 2, received five national awards last week during the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors.

The city won first place in the category of Public Affairs Programming for "Las Vegas Town Hall," which is hosted by Mayor Oscar Goodman and City Manager Virginia Valentine. The program competed with 16 entries from major cities around the country, including Houston and Washington, D.C.

KCLV also received four third-place honors.

Beginning at 6 tonight, Channel 2 will air the eight-hour Sept. 5 public hearing about Yucca Mountain that was hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Citizens have until Oct. 5 to submit their comments to the Department of Energy.

The city is also being acknowledged for the services it offers on its website.

A study released today by researchers at Brown University's Taubman Center for Public Policy ranked Las Vegas' website 28th out of 78 cities evaluated.

The scale measured the availability of information and services, the quality of citizen access, and the amount of material that would help citizens hold leaders accountable.

Two victims taken to LV hospital

Two of five people injured following a series of explosions at a plant near Minden-Tahoe Airport were in critical condition today at the University Medical Center Burn Unit.

Both victims from the Monday night incident were transported to UMC by medical flights. They were identified only as men, one age 28, the other age unknown, a UMC spokesman said. No further details about the men or their injuries were available.

The other three victims were flown to a burn unit in Davis, Calif. They were in critical but stable condition, officials said, noting that the victims suffered second- and third-degree burns.
