New hospital taking shape in out-of-town construction

Developers of a 120-bed hospital at the intersection of Tropical Parkway and Losee Road say they have started to construct parts of the building, which will be shipped to the site within a few weeks.

"This building is being constructed although you don't see anything on the site," said Terry Allen, a former hospital administrator who is involved with the project.

City officials said Park Place Medical LLC, the company that's developing the hospital, can't do anything at the site before receiving the proper grading and building permits.

"We haven't even received some of the preliminary studies," said Lenny Badger, who oversees the city's grading permits. "If they're out there doing anything, then it's without a permit."

Park Place Medical officials said they won't start construction without permission. John McDonald, a partner in the company, said the building parts should arrive at the site for storage within the next two weeks.

A groundbreaking for the hospital took place July 17, and completion is expected for 2003. The project also includes a medical office building, a senior apartment complex, a nursing home, a hospice, a hotel and a retail center.

Lake Mead Hospital and Medical Center is the only hospital in North Las Vegas, which has about 120,000 residents.

Another hospital with 180 beds is planned for a portion of the Craig Ranch Golf Course and will be developed by Delaware-based Universal Health Services. That company also built Summerlin Hospital and owns Valley Hospital Medical Center and Desert Springs Hospital.

Universal Health Services officials could not be reached for comment. Badger said the city had not issued permits for that project, either.
