Southern Nevadans open their hearts in many ways

Monday, Sept. 17, 2001 | 8:23 a.m.

Autumn Terrell watched terrorism strike the World Trade Center and the Pentagon from her classrooms at Eldorado High School Tuesday and wanted to pitch in.

Terrell, 15, and her friends raised more than $500 for the American Red Cross by scrubbing and hosing down dirty cars Sunday.

"We were just sitting around watching it and seeing all those people that needed help, and we wanted to do something," Terrell said. "I got the idea for a car wash and asked my aunt if we could do it."

Terrell's aunt, Robbie Pearce, agreed to help, and Terrell took it from there, calling friends to pitch in.

Other Las Vegas residents and businesses are also collecting and donating money to help the families and victims of Tuesday's terrorist acts.
