No new dates set for Yucca hearings

Monday, Sept. 17, 2001 | 10:20 a.m.

The Department of Energy has not rescheduled a set of public hearings on a proposed waste repository at Yucca Mountain.

No new date for the meetings, originally scheduled Sept. 12 in Amargosa Valley and Sept. 13 in Pahrump, has been set in the wake of Tuesday's terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.

An 8 1/2-hour hearing in North Las Vegas Sept. 5 turned testy and drew criticism from Nevada officials, who said the state's residents did not have a fair chance to speak because of limited time.

The DOE is attempting to gather public comment on a DOE report that sees no major obstacles in building the nation's only nuclear waste dump at the mountain, 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
