Memorial planned at Red Rock Canyon

Monday, Sept. 17, 2001 | 9:28 a.m.

A walkway dedicated to the victims of last week's terrorist attacks will be unveiled Sept. 29 in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

A series of stone tiles mined from a quarry near Goodsprings will bear the names of people who donated $300 per tile to honor victims of the attacks, Bureau of Land Management spokesman Phil Guerrero said.

The tiles also will be dedicated to medical personnel and others who contributed to search-and-rescue and recovery efforts.

The walkway is under construction near the tortoise enclosure in Red Rock Canyon, about 15 miles west of Las Vegas. The walkway will help people who use wheelchairs and walkers to navigate the rugged mountain terrain, Guerrero said.
