Letter: Passengers are real culprits

Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001 | 7:44 a.m.

Like many others Wednesday morning, I watched the early news to see if any further information was gathered regarding the New York City and Washington, D.C., attacks. The first thing I heard was that there were 81 persons aboard one of the planes that struck the World Trade Center tower and only three terrorists with knives.

This struck me as the "real" tragedy. To think that three people with knives could herd that large of a group of people around like sheep disgusts me. Those Americans had their chance at bat and walked away from the plate without taking a swing.

What have we become? I fully blame the passengers of the three planes that struck buildings for this entire debacle. Sure, the terrorists and those who support them make me angry, but they were only doing their jobs. Americans lost this battle because we have all become afraid to act and take responsibility for our own safety.
