HAGERSTOWN, Md. -- Nearly $1.5 million in gambling proceeds have been distributed to nonprofit organizations in Washington County.
The money disbursed Tuesday came from tip jars, a legal form of gambling that is taxed by a county gaming commission.
Every six months the commission gives half of the proceeds to the Washington County Fire and Rescue Association and divides the remainder among other charities.
Sixty-five nonprofits benefitted from grants of up to $50,000.
