Volunteers sought for annual classic
The Invensys Classic golf tournament, Oct. 10-14, is looking for volunteers to serve as hosts, scorers and gallery security. The 19th annual PGA tournament benefits several local charities.
Volunteers must be 18 and must pay $25 to defray expenses. In return, volunteers will receive a badge to enter the tournament all five days; a season badge for a guest; wholesale prices on golf shoes and other considerations. To sign up, call Michele Morphy at (702) 242-3008.
Opportunity Village, Rotary team up
The Las Vegas University Rotary Club, with Opportunity Village, is sponsoring a book drive during September to help stock libraries at four schools.
The schools are Desert Pines High School, Mabel Hoggard Magnet Elementary School and John S. Park and Robert Lake elementary schools.
Both new and used books will be accepted and may be dropped off at Opportunity Village Thrift Store, 4000 W. Sahara Ave., through Sept. 29.
Station Casinos gives $10,000 to 8 schools
Station Casinos has quadrupled donations to eight Clark County elementary schools. The company had planned to give $2,500 apiece to the high-need elementary schools, but this week increased that to $10,000 each as part of the Smart Start School Partnership Program.
The money will be used for student incentives, teacher recognition programs, volunteers, computers and other school needs.
Schools receiving the donations are Laura Dearing, Lorna Kesterson, C.T. Sewell, H.P. Fitzgerald, Whitney, Rex Bell, Ollie Detwiler and C.P. Squires elementary schools.
Horizon Marketplace Merchants
will celebrate the End of Summer Block Party 3-7 p.m. Sunday at the southeast corner of Eastern Avenue and Horizon Ridge Parkway in Henderson.
There will be live music, free merchandise, gift certificates, party samples and a chance to win a weekend getaway. Call 592-4256.
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Continuing Education
Certificate Programs will present the Nevada Association of Fashion Design 7-9 p.m. Monday on the UNLV campus. The event, for 16-year-olds and older, is free to the public. Call 895-3394 to RSVP.
The Jewish Community Center
of Southern Nevada is accepting applications for the community-wide celebration of National Jewish Arts Week. The JCC is looking for Jewish artists or artists who craft Jewish art. For an application or more information, call Nancy Weinberger at 794-0090.
