Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001 | 10:17 a.m.
Male Athlete of the Week: ANTIONE WHITE
School: Las Vegas
Class: Senior
Sport: Football
Last week: White rushed for 247 yards and five touchdowns on 17 carries, leading the Wildcats to a 52-27 victory at Clark. White scored on runs of 12, one, 28 and 32 yards in the second quarter, then added a 69-yard touchdown run in the third to help Las Vegas pull away to its first victory of the season. "The line blocked real well for him, and he generally made a guy miss for those scores," Wildcats coach Kris Cinkovich said. "He struggled last week, so he was determined to come out and get it going."
Female Athletes of the Week: DANA CORTEZ and McKENNA FORD
School: Bonanza
Classes: Senior (Cortez), Junior (Ford)
Sport: Tennis
Last week: The Bengals' top doubles team won four of five matches to lead their squad to victories over perennial Sunrise Region powers Green Valley and Silverado. In Thursday's 12-10.5 win over the defending 4A state champion Skyhawks, Cortez and Ford lost to unbeaten sisters Christina and Sabrina Capannolo in a tiebreaker, then bounced back to defeat Lauren Martines and Rachel Cohen in a tiebreaker for Bonanza's decisive points. "We've got so much respect for Silverado. We were just hoping to be close," Bengals coach Shawn Seiler said. "We had to win the last doubles match. It doesn't get much bigger than that."
