Prep football picks: Bishop Gorman to greet ex-coach with loss
Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001 | 10:54 a.m.
Two weeks in and just three losses (two at the hands of Cheyenne). Though my Foothill pick was omitted from last week's section, I'll fess up and admit I didn't take Centennial. This week looks like the toughest yet, with a half-dozen potential pitfalls out there.
Friday's Games
BISHOP GORMAN (2-0) at RANCHO (1-1), 7 p.m.
Rams coach Roger Whalen hosts his former team. He'll know what to expect from the Gaels, but that doesn't mean his new squad will be able to stop his old one. Look for Gorman's superior size and firepower to prevail.
Pick: Gorman 21, Rancho 7
CIM.-MEMORIAL (1-1) at LAS VEGAS (1-1), 7 p.m.
After two years of frustration against the Spartans, the Wildcats have the team to match up in the trenches. Whether they can slow down Kellen Marshall remains to be seen.
Pick: Las Vegas 27, Cimarron 24
CHEYENNE (1-1) at DESERT PINES (2-0), 7 p.m.
With just two touchdowns in two weeks, the Shields could be in for a long night.
Pick: Desert Pines 20, Cheyenne 7
DURANGO (2-0) at ELDORADO (0-2), 7 p.m.
The Blazers wore down Rancho in the second half last week.
Pick: Durango 24, Eldorado 14
CHAPARRAL (2-0) at CENTENNIAL (1-1), 7 p.m.
Coming off a stunner against Foothill, the Bulldogs will try to knock the Cowboys from the ranks of the unbeaten. Chaparral's defense could be the difference.
Pick: Chaparral 26, Centennial 14
GREEN VALLEY (1-1) at PALO VERDE (2-0), 7 p.m.
Nobody's playing better football than the Panthers.
Pick: Palo Verde 35, Green Valley 7
BONANZA (0-2) at VALLEY (1-1), 7 p.m.
The Vikings offense is back on track.
Pick: Valley 27, Bonanza 7
WESTERN (0-2) at MOJAVE (0-2), 7 p.m.
Two teams desperate for a victory.
Pick: Mojave 20, Western 13
CLARK (0-2) at BASIC (0-2), 7 p.m.
Both look to stop the bleeding.
Pick: Clark 14, Basic 13
CORONADO (1-0) at THE MEADOWS (2-0), 7 p.m.
The Cougars looked good in game one, but stopping Meadows' 31-game winning streak is another matter altogether.
Pick: Meadows 21, Coronado 7
FAITH LUTHERAN (3-0) at SIERRA VISTA (0-1), 7 p.m.
The Crusaders will be outnumbered, but experience is on their side.
Pick: Faith Lutheran 10, Sierra Vista 7
FOOTHILL (1-1) at NOTRE DAME (Calif.), 7:30 p.m.
One of California's top programs hands the Falcons another loss.
Pick: Notre Dame 35, Foothill 14
SILVERADO (1-1) at BONITA VISTA (Calif.), 7 p.m.
When in doubt, go with the out-of-towners.
Pick: Bonita Vista 28, Silverado 17
Last week: 9-2. This season: 20-3 (.870)
