MORONGO INDIAN RESERVATION, Calif. -- Maurice Lyons was sworn in as leader of the 1,000-member Morongo Band of Mission Indians, vowing to preserve Indian gambling casinos that may face increased competition.
California voters last year passed a constitutional amendment that legalized gambling at Indian casinos. But "the ink has barely been dry on the compacts and there are forces that are trying to undermine our agreement," Lyons said in remarks released before last week's ceremonies.
"We will continue to oppose the expansion of gambling in California," he said.
Card clubs and horse racetracks have been lobbying state lawmakers for permission to expand gambling operations at their locations.
Lyon also said one of his priorities will be preserving the tribal cultural heritage.
Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante helped swear in Lyons, 51, and six new members of the tribal council.
