Editorial: Vegas shows heart during trying time

Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001 | 8:41 a.m.

Las Vegas is viewed by outsiders as an adult playground, a flashy place that caters to fantasies, and therefore has little in common with mainstream America. We have worked hard to promote that flashy image, but the aftermath of Tuesday's horrific attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., has proven that Las Vegas is also as much a part of mainstream America as any other community when it comes to sharing in the nation's grief.

Politicians such as Mayor Oscar Goodman and Gov. Kenny Guinn, as well as our congressional delegation, delivered heartfelt messages in the aftermath of the explosions. Many residents have lowered flags to half mast. The Strip also did its part by closing down many of its shows and attractions.

United Blood Services centers throughout the Las Vegas Valley were overwhelmed with donors who came from all walks of life. Cocktail waitresses, lawyers, airline workers and casino dealers all were giving blood.

This community, which has been blessed with a thriving economy, deserves to feel proud of the collective way it has come together in response to tragedy. It did not require the flash that has made Las Vegas famous. At work was simple old-fashioned American pride.

America is a nation with a strong resolve and will rebound from these events, as will Las Vegas. We may have to endure certain inconveniences, such as longer waits at airports to pass through security. Over time, however, we are confident that our lives will return to normal.
