Doctors find bullet wound after crash

Metro homicide detectives are investigating a Saturday evening shooting that claimed one man while he was driving southbound on Jones Boulevard near Lake Mead Boulevard.

Ernie Achatz, 24, was traveling in the 2200 block of North Jones Boulevard about 7 p.m. when his car crossed the median and crashed, police said.

Police and paramedics responded to what they thought was a fatal crash. Achatz was taken to University Medical Center, where doctors later found a gunshot wound in his neck.

Police said one witness saw a yellow full-size pickup driving beside the car shortly before it crashed. The truck was an American model and had an extended cab. Police have not determined if the truck was involved in the shooting, but would like to question the occupants.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Secret Witness at 385-5555 or Metro Homicide at 229-3521.

Police ID man killed last week

A man found stabbed to death last week in a mobile home has been identified as 38-year-old Bradley Kinman.

Kinman was found dead Sept. 2 about 1:30 a.m. in the rear of a trailer in the Desert Paradise Mobile Home Park in the 4000 block of Las Vegas Boulevard North near Nellis Boulevard, Metro Police said.

Kinman, whose hometown was unknown to police, apparently was having an argument with a resident of the trailer. Christopher T. Smith, 45, is accused of stabbing Kinman to death, police said. Smith was found hiding in a nearby wash about four hours after Kinman's body was discovered. Smith was booked into the Clark County jail on murder charges, police said.

Boyfriend charged in shooting

A man was arrested Saturday in connection with the shooting death of his girlfriend in an apartment near North Nellis Boulevard and Stewart Avenue.

Police allege Kashard Omar Brown, 25, shot 26-year-old Rebekah Joy Hanson. The two were living together and had a history of domestic violence, Metro Police said.

Brown called 911 about 4:50 a.m. to report an accidental shooting at the apartment, 451 North Nellis Blvd. Police and paramedics responded and found Hanson's body inside the apartment. She died at the scene.

Brown was arrested at a friend's apartment without incident and is charged with murder.

Lake Mead area delays expected

Two construction projects will cause temporary closures this month at Lake Mead National Recreational Area facilities in Arizona. The projects are not expected to back up traffic more than 15 minutes on the access roads to Pearce Ferry and South Cove.

Temple Bar will close its campground from Sept. 10 until about Sept. 30 for the resurfacing of roadways and parking pads. A temporary camping area will be established in the overflow parking area. There will be no shade or other amenities in this area, but portable toilets and a water tank will be provided. Camping fees will also be waived.

Parking lots at the South Cove launch ramp facility will be closed from Sept. 26 to Oct. 5 for resurfacing, and the launch ramp will be sealed and chipped. A portion of the launch ramp will remain open for use at all times, but boaters will have to park at the various pull-outs along the access road.

Native mare takes top price

Fifty-three wild horses found new homes after an adoption program aired Friday on national television.

The adoption was the third televised event from the studio of Superior Livestock Auction in Fort Worth, Texas.

A Reno man paid the top price of $2,500 for a wild horse that he and his granddaughter spotted at the National Wild Horse and Burro Center at Palomino Valley.

Bidders from Colorado and West Virginia also participated in the adoption program. Several horses are still available for adoption to qualified individuals. The adoption fee is $125.

Killer receives 2 to 16 years

A 39-year-old homeless man who stabbed another homeless man to death with a broken bottle was sentenced Monday to three to 16 years in prison.

Deputy Public Defender Steve Immerman had asked District Judge Kathy Hardcastle to give Timothy Fay a two to five-year sentence in the death of John Korreckt, 43, noting Fay's lack of prior felony convictions.

Fay, who was cooperative with police, in July pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter with use of a deadly weapon.
