LAKE MEAD: As is typically the case, Labor Day weekend produced a large number of visitors to the lake, but very few anglers. Those who did try their luck had fair results for striped bass and an occasional largemouth bass.
Las Vegas angler Don Sollberger said he and two companions caught 16 stripers that ranged from one to three pounds while fishing near Anchor Island last Friday.
Those fish were caught with Sassy Shad and Cordell Spot lures. Sollberger, a veteran bass angler, said largemouth bass are beginning to be found with stripers and may be caught by reeling crank baits very slowly through schools of shad. Stripers will hit fast moving baits while largemouth bass will take the slower lures.
This week Nevada Division of Wildlife biologists have been seeing stripers boiling in Las Vegas Bay and near the intake tower at Saddle Island.
Over the weekend NDOW creel census clerks who were working in the Overton Arm saw very few anglers and failed to check a single fish.
LAKE MOHAVE: Boaters have been finding fair success for striped bass above Cottonwood Cove and have been catching fish that range from nine to 15 inches. Still fishing and trolling with anchovies and squid has been the preferred method for catching the fish.
Trout fishing has been good following the trout plants. The next plant is scheduled for today.
WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA: Largemouth bass fishing has been fairly good with a number of anglers catching fish that are around 12 inches. Bass up to 17 inches have been caught as well. Trout fishing has been improving with some 12 to 13-inch fish being caught. Temperatures in the area have been ranging from daytime highs in the upper 80s to evening lows in the 40s.
EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR: Fishing has been fair for stocked rainbow trout. The action at the Lincoln County lake should improve as the water temperature drops.
ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR: Anglers who were on the area for the holiday weekend had fair results for small largemouth bass and crappie. Trout are hitting as well, but the action is still below par.
LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS: A small load of channel catfish were stocked into Floyd Lamb State Park, Lorenzi Park Pond and Sunset Park Pond recently and a larger load was also stocked into the ponds last week.
Anglers fishing for other warm water species have been successful using worms. Several largemouth bass ranging in size between 2 and 5 pounds have been caught at Floyd Lamb State Park using spinnerbaits and crankbaits.
