Editorial: Second-hand smoke study a healthy sign

Friday, Sept. 7, 2001 | 9:35 a.m.

It certainly is welcome that the Nevada School of Medicine has received federal money to conduct the first clinical study of how second-hand smoke affects casino dealers. Researchers believe there is a link between illnesses connected to second-hand smoke, such as heart disease and lung cancer. The $2.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health will allow for continued research into how anti-oxidant vitamin supplements might offer some protection against second-hand smoke. Preliminary evidence suggests that these vitamin supplements might be effective.

It's no coincidence that Nevada, which has the greatest percentage of adult smokers, also has the highest rate of smoking-related deaths in the nation. While smoking is a choice that those individuals make, nonsmokers who inhale second-hand smoke don't have an option, which is just one more reason why casinos should take this health issue seriously and offer their employees protection from second-hand smoke.
