Washington to be honored Tuesday
The Black Elected Officials of Southern Nevada will host a reception in honor of the Las Vegas Fire Department's newly appointed Chief, David L. Washington.
The reception will begin 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the West Las Vegas Arts Center, 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd. City Councilwoman Lynette Boggs McDonald will serve as the mistress of ceremonies at the reception. For more information, call 303-4830.
Goodwill, PTAs to help families
Goodwill of Southern Nevada and the Nevada Parent Teacher Association will provide all participating PTAs with 50-percent off coupons valid on clothing and school supplies for at-risk families Tuesday at Big Dog's Cafe, 6390 W. Sahara Ave.

Reading session set at Galleria Saturday
The Southern Nevada Literacy Coalition will host a literacy awareness day 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday at the Galleria at Sunset mall.
Participation is free. SNLC members and community volunteers will read children's books throughout the event. Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman will also be reading. Call 341-7135.
UMC will host event on Sunday
University Medical Center will hold a lecture on prostate cancer at 7 p.m. Monday at the Desert Willow Community Center, 2020 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway, Henderson.
Dr. William B. Steinkohl will discuss early detection, treatments and effects of prostate cancer.
A question-and-answer session will follow the lecture. Call 383-2090 to register for the free seminar.
Rawson, Perkins will speak at session
The Nevada Arts Advocates will host a fall arts awareness luncheon at noon on Tuesday at the Stardust hotel.
The event is open to interested art constituents and organizations. The speakers will include state Sen. Ray Rawson, R-Las Vegas, and Assembly Speaker Richard Perkins, D-Henderson.
Entertainment will be provided by the Green Valley High School Madrigal. Cost is $30. For more information, call 362-8885.
Sharpen up on cactus knowledge
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes and walks free of charge, but reservations are required for all programs, which begin at the Visitors Center. Some upcoming programs:
It's Cactus -- Get My Point: On this two-mile moderate hike Wednesday, ages 12 to adult will learn about the different cactus at Red Rock Canyon and how they were used by natives long ago.
Predator and Prey: Ages 5-10 with adults will find out what a "predator" is during this short, one-hour program while exploring the predator and prey relationship with a game or two at the picnic area pavilion on Thursday.
Let's Talk Archaeology: Ages 8 to adult may join rangers for some fun in the Visitors Center to answer questions regarding archaeology. Also "discover" and examine some real artifacts during this one-hour adventure on Sept. 14.

Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth
will open its drop-in center on Oct. 1 at 11 a.m. The center will be located at 2550 E. Tropicana Ave.
The Women's League of Temple Beth Sholom
is starting its new season at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Temple Beth Sholom, 107000 Havenwood Drive. The program features a film entitled Gefilite Fish-The Generations Speak Out, and a presentation. A discussion will follow each segment. Cost is $5. Call 804-1333.
The Arts District of the city of Las Vegas
will host the opening of the new George L. Sturman Museum of Fine Art 7-10 p.m. Tuesday at the Arts Factory, 107 E. Charleston Blvd. Call 384-2615.
