Settlement made in suit

Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001 | 11:46 a.m.

North Las Vegas City Council members approved a $40,000 settlement Wednesday to an employee who alleged that city officials had discriminated against him on the basis of race and age.

Ray Gamble, 63, who worked in the public works department since 1977, filed a federal lawsuit in 1997. A trial date had been set for Oct. 15.

City officials said they agreed to settle the case to avoid a possible larger jury verdict.

Gamble, who is black, also alleged city officials had failed to promote and train him after his applications for higher positions failed in the fall of 1994, Brenda Johnson, the city's spokeswoman, said. The selection panel that interviewed Gamble and other candidates chose other people for the jobs because they felt they were more qualified, Johnson added.

Gamble and his attorney could not be reached for comment.
