Medicare insurance plan to be offered

Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001 | 11:01 a.m.

A big Nevada Medicare insurance provider will offer supplemental coverage through a new program being introduced this month.

PacifiCare Health Systems Inc., which has 68,200 commercial and health-maintenance organization customers in Nevada, is introducing its Secure Horizons Medicare supplement in four packages ranging in price from $87 a month to $127 a month for a 65-year-old non-smoker.

Supplemental insurance allows customers to purchase a policy to protect financial resources so that they aren't depleted by the expense of a major illness not completely covered by Medicare.

Kayla Arnesen, a spokeswoman for the Santa Ana, Calif.-based company, said supplemental Medicare insurance coverage has been around for a long time, but it is a new offering for PacifiCare. Coverage for Medicare-approved customers will offer discounts for prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, vision, hearing and alternative medical treatments.
