Walk-A-Thon will benefit research
The Las Vegas Chapter of the American Parkinson's Disease Association will hold its seventh annual Walk-A-Thon 8 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Saturday at MGM Grand.
The event will raise money for Parkinson's disease research and to show that Parkinson's can be managed through proper diet, exercise, medications, and a positive mental outlook.

Learn more about wildlife in desert
Hikes and other educational programs will be held this week at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Some upcoming programs:
Lost Creek Hike: Eight-year-olds to adults will explore for tracks and other signs that reveal the surprisingly large number of wildlife that exist in Red Rock Canyon along the two-mile trail Thursday.
Edward Abbey's Desert: Adults will discuss the contemplative observations made by writer Edward Abbey about the vast harshness and the poetic fragility of the Mojave Desert on this moderate two-mile hike into Icebox Canyon on Friday. Some rock scrambling will be involved.
Canyon Critters: The family is welcome to explore a variety of species that have adapted and made the desert their home. No hike involved for this program that will take place Sept. 14, 21, and 28.
Bighorn: Life on the Edge: Adults will search the rocky ledges for the elusive bighorn and discuss their natural history on this three-mile moderately strenuous hike behind Sandstone Canyon Saturday.
Morning Meditation: Eight-year-olds to adults are welcome to enjoy this two-mile moderately easy hike and try to catch a glimpse of other early morning risers like the rock squirrel, coyote and mule deer, Sunday.
Reservations are required for all programs, which begin at the Visitors Center. Call 363-1922.
Program planned at Galleria at Sunset
The Southern Nevada Literacy Coalition will hold Family Read Day 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday at the Galleria at Sunset.
Participants will read for 15 minutes or longer to a group at the mall from a favorite book or one of the books that will be supplied by the event coordinators.

Help for various problems is offered
The International Church of Las Vegas, 8300 Cimarron Road, will offer the following support groups at 7 p.m. Monday at the church:
Seven Steps to Freedom, addiction; Window of Hope, sexual abuse; Search for Significance, building self worth through Jesus Christ; Divorce Care; and Freedom From Co-dependency.
Cost is $15. Road to Recovery is an on-going open group for anyone in need of support. Call 242-2273, Ext. 232.
