Security workers drop union

DETROIT -- Security workers at the MGM Grand Detroit Casino voted to dismiss the Michigan Association of Police as their union.
Thursday's 60-35 vote came only six months after the guards signed a four-year labor agreement. Some guards were unhappy with the contract's provisions for wages, paid holidays and grievance procedures, the Detroit News reported.
The vote means MGM's 127 security workers will be prevented by federal law from organizing or striking for the next 12 months, said Joel Felt, a labor relations specialist for the police union.
"It basically means they have no union, no contract, no grievance procedures and no seniority rights," Felt said. " ... Given the fact that it's Detroit, Michigan, and Labor Day weekend, the irony is not lost on me."
The National Labor Relations Board likely will certify the election results in seven to 10 days.
The union doesn't plan to object to the guards' decision, Felt said. "We'd sure like to come back in eight or 12 months and revisit these people."
