AT&T Wireless said about 2,800 residential customers in Las Vegas will have to find a new local telephone provider over the next several months, following the company's announcement that it would discontinue its "fixed wireless" telephone and high-speed Internet access service.
AT&T Wireless announced Tuesday it would phase out the service because of its heavy capital requirements and because it was not consistent with its core business strategy. The service uses a fixed antenna in the home, rather than traditional phone lines, to deliver local and long distance telephone service, as well as high-speed Internet access.
Rich Blasi, spokesman for AT&T Wireless, said the service will be phased out market-by-market over the next six months, though he didn't know when Las Vegas would be phased out.
Less than 10 AT&T Wireless employees will lose their jobs in Las Vegas, Blasi said.
