WASHINGTON -- The Pentagon was to announce today the winner of a huge bidding war over which manufacturers will build the Joint Strike Fighter, a new high-performance jet that may be the largest defense program in U.S. history.
The competition pits a team led by Boeing Co. against Lockheed-Martin of Bethesda, Md. The jet is to replace Air Force F-16 Falcons and A-10 Thunderbolts, Navy F/A-18 Hornets and Marine AV-8B Harriers.
The winner-take-all contract could eventually top $200 billion for 3,000 planes.
