Letter: No one forced to worship

Friday, Oct. 26, 2001 | 4:12 a.m.

On Oct. 24 Jerry Sturdivant wrote in to complain about the 1954 decision to add "under God" to the "Pledge of Allegiance." One nation under God. He seems worried about that being "forced" on our nation. He further complains about permission being given for "God Bless America" to be posted in this nation's schools.

He compares these instances to the Taliban and Afghanistan. He cites the "separation of church and state" as his reasoning.

Nobody is forcing anyone to say "under God" -- they can leave it out if they choose. Children are not forced in school to say or sing "God Bless America." They are not encouraged to pray. Everyone in the United States of America is free to refuse to say any of these things.

We should also be free to pray, add "One nation under God" if that is our choice, and sing "God Bless America" wherever and whenever we so chose.

No one is forcing anyone to worship in America and no one is forcing anyone not to worship in America.

Why do some individuals feel threatened by another persons desire to exercise their freedom of religion?
