Letter: Fears signal win for terrorists

Friday, Oct. 26, 2001 | 4:12 a.m.

I'm deeply dismayed at the lack of intestinal fortitude of our leaders and people.

Three hundred million held captive by the threat of disease and terrorist attacks? Congress closes down, shows close, Denver says "No new year's celebration," exhibiters cancel participation, and on and on. All are sending a signal, loud and strong, that the terrorists are winning; they are shaping and restricting our lives, making us change out of fear.

What happened to "Don't give in to fear!" "Get back to normal!" "Get back to business as usual"?

Of all of the disasters, sacrifices and accomplishments experienced in the United States in the last 225 years, how many have been successful in the face of fear? Only those that we, the people have allowed or succumbed to.
