Letter: Shame to lose dedicated teacher
Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001 | 8:39 a.m.
A few weeks ago a teacher, Bart Boulton, wrote a letter about the Clark County School District's latest $4 million administrative overhaul. He was buying supplies for his class out of his own pocket.
This letter addresses a similar issue. This week my 7-year-old son's teacher from last year expressed to my wife that the district jumped his $60-a-month health insurance to $460 a month. His wife was in tears when he got home the day the notice arrived. His household is a single-income, five-member family.
He said he probably will have to leave to teach elsewhere because they cannot absorb that kind of hit. We love this teacher and hope our middle child can benefit from him. He is fantastic, dedicated totally to the kids; no child is left out of his attention.
I imagine many teachers in the county will find that it is just not worth it. I make almost twice as much as teachers, and our home could not absorb that much increase in health insurance. If the school district loses this teacher, we all will have lost someone truly special.
How about if we lose an administrative executive and one office staff person in every department countywide? After all, what is the true objective of education? I heard more than one administrator cry for more for the sake of the kids. Well, is it true or just lip service?
By the way, just where are your heads?
