Las Vegas area fishing report: Striper action suffers slowdown

Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001 | 1:17 a.m.

NEVADA DIVISION OF WILDLIFE

Striped bass fishing in Lake Mead has been very slow in recent days while the action for largemouth bass has been good.

Angler Don Sollberger told the Nevada Division of Wildlife that he and other boaters have been seeing stripers on their fish finders, but the fish are refusing to bite. The good news is that threadfin shad, the primary forage for stripers, have been moving to the coves, so shore fishing should improve.

Sollberger said he has had good luck for largemouth bass by fishing near points that are associated with deep water. He has been using a technique called down shooting with a red worm at depths of 25 to 35 feet.

Anglers who have been fishing in the Overton Arm have reported similar results with good fishing for largemouth bass but slow action for stripers.

Elsewhere in area fishing:

Drifting with anchovies and squid remains the preferred method for catching stripers at Cottonwood. These baits are producing as well for shore anglers who are fishing at night.
