Harter to take medical school post in LV

Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001 | 9:29 a.m.

CARSON CITY -- Michael Harter, husband of University of Nevada, Las Vegas President Carol Harter, has been named to head the University of Nevada Medical School in Las Vegas.

Since July 2000 Harter has devoted half of his time as associate dean for planning for the school of medicine and the other half as health education coordinator for the University and Community College System of Nevada.

The appointment was announced Tuesday by Interim Dean Stephen McFarlane, who said Harter would assume his new job immediately. McFarlane of Reno has been interim dean since Robert Miller of Las Vegas announced his resignation earlier this year.

McFarlane said he will make one visit a week to Las Vegas, but Harter, who will have the title of vice dean, will be responsible for day-to-day operations.

Students attend their first two years of classes in Reno and in the third and fourth years have the option of working with physicians in either Las Vegas or Reno.

McFarlane said he was impressed with Harter's work on the strategic plan for the medical school and in preparing the school for an inspection by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

John Lilley, president of the University of Nevada, Reno, said Harter "brings a great deal of experience to this position, having been dean of the College of Health and Human Services at Sacramento State University for four years."

Harter also served as dean of the school of professions at State University of New York at Brockport, and was dean of the College of Health and Human Services at Ohio University.
