Suspension stands for NAACP chapter

Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001 | 9:22 a.m.

The national board of the NAACP upheld its suspension of the Las Vegas chapter in a weekend meeting in Los Angeles.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People suspended the Las Vegas chapter's charter in April after complaints about administrative inadequacies, questionable election procedures and infighting.

Gene Collins, who was president of the local chapter, responded by filing a restraining order in District Court to prevent the national organization from suspending the local chapter without due process.

On Oct. 4, District Judge Sally Loehrer reinstated the charter of the Las Vegas chapter but ruled that a national administrator would run the branch.

Loehrer said the national organization should complete its due process requirements by holding a hearing on the matter at its Oct. 20 meeting of the national board of directors in Los Angeles. At that meeting, the board decided to uphold its decision to suspend the charter for one year and reorganize the chapter.
