Letter: Help the kids here at home

Friday, Oct. 19, 2001 | 4:19 a.m.

I'm writing because after listening to President Bush on TV the other night, he asked our young people to each send money to the children of Afghanistan for food. Although this is a worthy cause, we are already sending $320 million for food and shelter.

I would rather he asked our children to help our American children whose parents have lost their jobs because of the war on America. I can tell you from experience you cannot live on unemployment checks alone -- try paying the high power bills and paying your rent and then try buying food for your kids.

I wonder in the coming months, when more people lose their jobs, if Bush will put a roof over our heads and send us money to live on. I can only pray that your children will not get sick, because when you lose your job you lose your health insurance.

This war has affected every one of us, but as Americans, if we help each other, we can pull through this nightmare.

So this evening when you're having your dinner, talk to your children about helping out another American child whose mommy and daddy have no job, and how they could help.
