Letter: Citizens must remain vigilant

Friday, Oct. 19, 2001 | 4:19 a.m.

Can it be unpatriotic to question why the cowardly terrorists attacked us on Sept. 11? Can it be unpatriotic to question whether our foreign policy -- or lack of one -- was responsible?

If any politician or citizen says yes, I'd suggest they read or re-read the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution.

Our founders sacrificed their lives and wealth to grant us the right and duty to petition and question our leaders about policy -- domestic and foreign.

Benjamin Franklin said, when asked, what have we wrought? "A Republic if we can keep it!"

Thomas Jefferson said that "the price of liberty is eternal vigilance."

Patriotic citizens have the right and duty to be vigilant, by exercising free speech, to protect our liberty and our republic. Blind faith in government can be unpartiotic and risky.
