Health benefits extended for laid-off employees

Friday, Oct. 19, 2001 | 10:08 a.m.

Park Place Entertainment Corp. of Las Vegas said Thursday it will extend medical insurance and other benefits for laid-off employees for up to two months after their layoff date.

The company will pay both the employer and employee contributions for full-time, active, permanent employees who are still out of work. Benefits extended over the two-month period include medical, basic life, dental and vision coverage, as well as counseling services. Company officials were unable to estimate the cost of the program.

Park Place has called back 500 workers on a temporary basis since layoffs began in mid-September, but an estimated 1,800 are still out of work at Park Place's five Las Vegas hotel-casinos.

"We recognize that people will find this a difficult time to pay for medical insurance," said Steve Bell, Park Place senior vice president of human resources. "During this period of travel industry recovery, as our marketing team works hard to build our business and bring back as many people as possible, we want to provide a cushion that helps to protect our people and their families.
