Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001 | 11:23 a.m.
Male Athlete of the Week: CAMERON PARKER
School: Palo Verde
Class: Sophomore
Sport: Tennis
Last week: Parker swept through the singles draw at the Sunset Region Tournament, winning five matches to take home the 2001 individual title. Parker's three-set victory over Durango's Dean Stavri in the finals capped his run and improved his overall season singles record to 31-0 overall. He begins play in the eight-man individual state tournament Friday. "He's got the mental and physical game, along with the talent to win," Panthers coach Tom Froistad said. "He's in tip-top physical shape, and he has an ability to change his strategy in the middle of a match, as he showed in the championship."
Female Athlete of the Week: CARRIE SCHOFIELD
School: Bishop Gorman
Classes: Sophomore
Sport: Tennis
Last week: The Gaels' top singles player remained unbeaten in 2001, capturing the Sunset Region individual championship with four tournament victories. Schofield, 29-0 heading into the event, downed The Meadows' Rebecca Ahmed in the finals in three sets to earn the title. She will take on Silverado's Lauren Martines in round one of the individual state tournament Friday. "She's been playing tennis a long time, but her confidence just really seemed to mature this year," Gorman coach Gordon Hammond said. "There was change and improvement in her game, and she's going to have to continue to help carry us for us to win state."
