Letter: Stifle gabby congressmen
Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001 | 9:16 a.m.
Outrageous is the word for the conduct of congressmen who leak secret information to the media. Why? They want further and favorable coverage from an appreciative media. President Bush was right to reprimand and restrict these dangerous motormouths.
The media isn't at fault. It can presume that congressmen release information that doesn't harm the nation's security if it's published. Congressmen who leak secrets betray our country and those who fight for it.
Some congressman have objected to the Bush restrictions, one senator saying he disclosed information he knew was secret but was "told" by somebody it was all right to do so. No you don't, senator! We citizens don't believe you. You would be tried as a traitor were you an ordinary guy. Murderous terrorists can't be stopped if reckless politicians like you continue to blab.
The Bush reprimand exposed the danger elected politicians can cause and should sharply reduce reckless leaking of military secrets. Our prayers are with you, Mr. President.
