Letter: Make payments by deduction
Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001 | 9:16 a.m.
Since I live in a senior development, where many residents will be facing a hardship when they can no longer deposit mail in the outgoing slots, the following suggestion could be of help:
Now is the time for residents to finally take advantage of having many payments deducted from their checking accounts. I don't write checks for the phone, gas, electric, cable and even some insurance payments. I am now able to pay my monthly dues to my association this way also.
I am aware that some seniors are apprehensive about doing this, but they receive the identical bill that they had been receiving. The notice will specifically designate that they do not need to send a remittance. The date the designated amount will be deducted is also shown.
It would be advantageous for the different utility companies to send a particular notice enabling those who want to sign up to do so.
Not only would signing up eliminate a trip to a blue mail box or a post office but it could allay any fears of theft. Another advantage would be not having to worry about paying these bills in case of illness or vacation.
