Durango girls open huge state golf lead

Not even darkness could slow down Durango High School's quest for a second-straight 4A girls golf state title on Wednesday.

The Trailblazers posted a five-player team score of 399 at par-73 Black Mountain Golf & Country Club, taking a 41-stroke lead over second-place Bishop Gorman before darkness halted play for the day.

Along with the Blazers and Gaels (440), only Galena (472) finished the 18-hole course. Green Valley and Silverado had identical scores of 350, with four of six golfers on each team done for the day.

Durango's Whitney Welch and Foothill's Christine Fernandez, the last two individual state champions, both shot even-par 73s in round one of the two-day event. Gorman's Danielle Reilly (74) is one stroke back, followed by Silverado's Stephanie Bird (76).

First-round play continued this morning, with foursomes slated to tee off in round two beginning at 11:30 a.m.
