State tennis tourney set to begin Thursday

The 2001 NIAA/U.S. Bank 4A State Tennis Tournament opens with four team matches at UNLV's Fertitta Tennis Complex Thursday, highlighted by a rematch of last year's girls championship.

Unbeaten Bishop Gorman and defending state champion Silverado will square off in one girls semifinal at 1:30 p.m., with Northern Region champion Galena battling Green Valley in the other, also at 1:30 p.m. Winners will advance to this year's team title clash, slated for 9 a.m. Friday.

In boys semifinal action, defending state champion Galena takes on Silverado and 2000 runner-up Bonanza plays Green Valley, with both matches at 9 a.m. The boys team title will be decided Friday at 9 a.m.

Individual state boys and girls singles and doubles tournaments begin Friday at 2 p.m., with all four championship matches scheduled for Saturday at noon.
