State convention to be held Saturday
The Nevada Council of the Blind will hold its 29th annual state convention 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the First Southern Baptist Church, Building C, 700 E. St. Louis Ave.
All members and friends are invited to attend. Among the speakers will be the newly elected president of the American Council of the Blind, Christopher Gray of San Francisco.

Alison Brown Quartet scheduled to perform
The Alison Brown Quartet will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive.
The performance is sponsored by the Henderson Parks and Recreation Department as part of its Family Series of cultural events. Grammy-winner Alison Brown is an internationally recognized banjoist with six critically acclaimed solo albums to her credit.

Free seminar may answer some questions
A free seminar, Parent Connection, will be 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Desert Pines High School for parents of children of all ages, including parents with special education children and grandparents raising their grandchildren.
Parent Connection will feature national keynote presenters Marilyn Swierk and Jason Dorsey, along with numerous local experts.
Topics include: Raising Responsible Children, Bully-Proofing Your Child, Navigating the School System, Being the Best Father You Can Be, How to Talk Effectively So Your Child Will Listen andspecial education issues and many more. Call 799-1133.
Flag football program will begin Sunday
The Jewish Community Center is offering a new sports program for boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 12 from Sunday through Nov. 25 at the Crossings Park in Summerlin.
Children will have an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of flag football, experience teamwork and have fun. Participants will receive a jersey and five weeks of activity. Volunteer coaches are being sought. Call 794-0090.
Grandsons of Italy in America
will host its annual dinner dance at 8 p.m.-midnight Sunday at Ellis Island Casino. The event will feature live music, door prizes and a silent auction. The fund-raiser silent auction is for MASH Village. Cost is $25. Call 254-3452.
The North Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce
presents "A Night at Roxy's at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Fiesta hotel, featuring champagne reception, live music and eligible bachelors and bachelorettes. Cost is $40; $30. Call 642-9595.
A women's health symposium
will be 8 a.m.-noon Saturday in the Adelson Auditorium at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, 3186 S. Maryland Parkway. The program is free, and a continental breakfast will be served. All women who attend who haven't had a mammogram in the last year will receive a certificate for a free mammogram during the month of November at Sunrise's Breast Diagnostic Center.
