Man hit by truck on Main Street
A man was killed Saturday while trying to cross Main Street near Owens Avenue.
Sam J. Tyler, 52, walked into the path of a GMC truck driven by 51-year-old Richard Ward, Metro Police said. Tyler was trying to cross Main Street about 10:45 a.m.
Ward braked and swerved, but was unable to avoid hitting the pedestrian, police said.
Tyler was taken to University Medical Center and died from his injuries about 7:15 p.m.
Method of study is established
Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa says the final touches have been placed on the format for a study on whether law enforcement officers in Clark and Washoe counties are singling out minorities for traffic stops.
The racial profiling study starts Jan. 1, and its results will be presented to the 2003 Legislature.
Despite requests from minority representatives and the American Civil Liberties Union, the data will not identify the officer who is making the stop.
The attorney general's office will compile the data from the local police agency.
When officers make traffic stops, they will record such information as the location, the number of people in the vehicle, the gender, age and race of the driver, the reason for the stop, whether any action was taken, whether the driver was handcuffed and whether a search of the car was made.
Accident blamed on running light
A 63-year-old man was killed Sunday, and a woman was in critical condition after a three-car accident that apparently involved a driver running a red light, Metro Police said.
Delmar Duckworth, 63, was killed in the accident after a car driven by Harry J. McAllister, 81, hit his 1990 Buick in the intersection of Koval Lane and Tropicana Avenue about 7 a.m., police said
Duckworth was turning left from Koval Lane onto westbound Tropicana Avenue, police said. McAllister, 81, was going east on Tropicana, approaching Koval Lane.
McAllister entered the intersection on a red light, police said. The front of his car crashed into the left side of Duckworth's car.
McAllister's car then crashed into a third vehicle. No one in that car suffered injuries.
Jennie McAllister, 91, remained in critical condition this morning at University Medical Center. Harry McAllister suffered moderate injuries.
New chief named to west region
The Small Business Administration appointed a regional administrator last week to serve small-business owners in Nevada.
Bruce C. Thompson of Fallbrook, Calif., will also oversee four other states -- California, Arizona, Hawaii and Guam -- making his region the largest out of 10 federal areas in the United States.
