twitterLetter: Cartoon fails to grasp meaning of Constitution

It seems that editorial cartoonist Mike Smith does not understand the meaning of the U.S. Constitution and its preamble. His misleading cartoon of Oct. 8 showed Joe Citizen complaining about Big Government before Sept. 11 and pleading for help from the government after the events of Sept. 11. That's exactly what the framers of the Constitution had in mind.
The preamble clearly states the duty of the federal government "... to provide for the common defense ..." So why would Mr. Smith belittle citizens for asking the federal government for military protection? And, the articles of the Constitution clearly attempt to rein in the powers of the central government and give its citizens a voice and a vote in keeping that power in check.
