Awards program set at Texas Station

The Disabilities Employment Awareness and Awards Program luncheon will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Texas Station to honor several outstanding employees with disabilities and employers who have strived to make their work place inclusive of persons with disabilities.

The National Disabilities Awareness month, celebrated annually each October, is a time set aside to educate Americans about an untapped segment of the labor force -- the employable individual with a disability. Call 486-5333 or 636-3033.

Hikers of all ages will learn about plants

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes and walks free of charge, but reservations are required for all programs, which begin at the Visitors Center. To make reservations or for information, call 363-1922. An upcoming program:

"Survival Plants," a program for ages 7 to adult. Participants can explore two miles of the Moenkopi trail on Wednesday and talk about the plants that the natives of long ago used for survival.

Sixth annual meeting will be held this week

The Nevada Weed Management Association will hold its sixth annual conference Wednesday and Thursday at the Castaways hotel.

Sue Donaldson, NWMA president and water quality specialist with the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, will speak on grant writing tips and sources for eradicating weeds.

Bob Wilson, extension educator, will discuss noxious weeds in Southern Nevada, and state Sen. Dean Rhodes will discuss funding for weed control.
