Poker room closed

Friday, Oct. 12, 2001 | 10:08 a.m.

The Riviera hotel-casino has closed its poker room, in part because of the current citywide downturn in tourism.

About 20 employees lost their jobs in the poker room's closure earlier this month. There are no plans to reopen the room, and the space will be converted to high-limit slots, said Duane Krohn, Riviera chief financial officer.

"We were looking for ... operations that weren't making money," Krohn said. "(Poker rooms) do quite well during the World Series (of Poker), but the rest of the year, it's really tough to make any money at it. You can only offer so many loss leaders."
